James Gunn and Peter Safran’s slate of DC movies continues to move forward.

Ana Nogueira, the actress and playwright who is now making forays into screenwriting, has been tapped to pen Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a standalone feature centered on the Kryptonian cousin of Superman being developed by DC Studios.

No director is attached and Nogueira’s deal only recently closed.

The project is actually a redo for Nogueira. The writer was quietly hired to pen a Supergirl movie in 2022 when Warner Bros. was developing the project as a spinoff of The Flash, then in post-production. Flash featured Sasha Calle as the heroine and the hope was to launch another DC film franchise.

Those hopes were seemingly dashed when Gunn and Safran were brought in to oversee a reorganized DC arm. That project was tossed as the new execs focused on creating a brand new slate, separate from former DC Films boss Walter Hamada’s vision. Early this year, Supergirl was revealed to be part of that slate as a project without any connection to the Flash movie. Rather it was now connected, in title and story, to a comic book mini-series written by Tom King that was published in 2021 and 2022 and sought to redefine the character as something more than just a girl version of Superman.

“Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl in this story, she is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton,” Gunn explained in a video released on Twitter at the time. “She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.”

The comic featured Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, who, along with superdog Krypto, gets caught up in a young alien girl’s galaxy-spanning revenge quest. DC Studios is keeping the project’s plot under wraps.

Gunn and Safran liked the work Nogueira had done on the previous Supergirl project and quietly brought her back, even giving her an overall DC writing deal.

Nogueira may be best known for a stint on CW’s The Vampire Diaries, with acting credits including The Michael J. Fox Show and The Blacklist. But she has also built a thriving writing career. Her play Which Way to the Stage debuted off-Broadway in 2022 and she is working on an adaptation of author Alice Sola Kim’s short story Mothers, Lock Up Your Daughters, set up at Warners with 21 Laps producing.

She is repped by CAA, Howard Green Entertainment, and Goodman Genow.

And wouldn't you know what I find on X, formerly Twitter...from an artist named Davi Alves. It's his take on a classic (The Daring New Adventures of) Supergirl 1984 cover for the story "Who Stole Supergirl's Life?" The story seemed a bit...here and there...but I think the title would've made for a Supergirl TV story.

It's down to two finalists according to The Hollywood Reporter...Milly Alcock and Meg Donnelly.

Screen tests for the role took place yesterday, according to several sources, with the field now narrowed to two actresses.

Milly Alcock, best known for her work on HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Meg Donnelly, who starred in Disney Channel’s hit musical franchise Zombies and who voices the character in recent and current DC animated movies, both tested in Atlanta, per sources. DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran were present.

Supergirl is a key part of Gunn and Safran’s plans as they piece together their slate for DC Studios. Warner Bros. Discovery hired the duo in late 2022 to reset the path for Warners’ movies focused on DC Comics characters.

Supergirl, who would headline her own movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow after being introduced in Gunn’s own Superman movie, Superman: Legacy, is a key component of that plan.

‘Supergirl’: Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones & Meg Donnelly Among Those In Mix To Screen Test For Role – The Dish

By Anthony D'Alessandro
January 10, 2024

https://deadline.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Supergirl-comic.jpg

EXCLUSIVE: We are hearing that DC Studios is planning to test actresses soon to star in Supergirl, and that Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly are in the mix.

There is a chance the studio could make a straight offer to a star, but all things are pointing toward screen tests for actresses, which will go down within the next month or so, we hear.

Deadline understands that natch, DC Studios co-boss James Gunn is definitely part of the process, as this is a character who likely will make its debut via a cameo in a DC project that isn’t Supergirl. The search is ongoing for a director.

Alcock is best known for her lead role on HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon, playing Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. She is repped by CAA, Shanahan Management, Entertainment 360 and Curtis Brown.

Jones, repped by CAA and Brillstein, counts feature credits such as Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth and Apple’s Oscar Best Picture winner CODA as well as the Netflix series Locke & Key.

Donnelly, repped by Gersh and Silver Lining Entertainment, has starred in Disney Channel’s Zombies franchise and is already the voice of Supergirl in the DC animated movies Legion of Superheroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One.

Gunn, with co-DC chief Peter Safran, first announced a Supergirl movie, Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow, during DC’s studio press day just more than a year ago. The movie is based on Tom King’s comic book series from 2022.

Said Gunn at the time, “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Superman Legacy, meanwhile, is prepping to shoot this spring in Georgia with David Corenswet (as Clark Kent/Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luther), Skyler Gisondo and Sara Sampaio, with Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced and Nathan Fillion playing Metamorpho, Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, respectively.

Superman: Legacy has been set for a worldwide release on July 11, 2025.

We’ll keep you in the loop as to who lands the big role.

DC had no comment.

Some rumored info on the characteristics for Supergirl in the new DCU that James Gunn is looking for.

https://www.cbr.com/rumor-james-gunn-supergirl-casting-fans/

Per the DCEUleaks subreddit, the rumor in question claims that Gunn himself will cast Supergirl, as opposed to a director for Woman of Tomorrow. The post featuring this bit of news also brought up Supergirl herself, stating that the Maid of Might is "being described as humorous with punk rock edginess to her," and "[overall] having a toughness to her due to her witnessing the death of Krypton as a child." It further mentioned that Krypto the Superdog will also be in the project, in addition to "the greater DCU," as well as stating that DC Studios is "looking to start filming in the second half of 2024," which the post speculated means Woman of Tomorrow will one of the next movies after Superman: Legacy.

Looks like a new name has been added to the rumor mill. Comic Book Movie reports

According to John Rocha on the latest episode of The Hot Mic, Madelyn Cline could either be in talks to play the Girl of Steel, or is someone Gunn and Warner Bros. are eyeing for the part.

If anything, she has the acting chops.

The 25-year-old actress will likely be best-known for Netflix's Outer Banks, but also played Whiskey in Glass Onion, and has appeared in Stranger Things, The Originals, and What Breaks the Ice.

Again, it's a rumor.

If there is any truth to what has been said / announced, this project will be a distinct departure in style from the prior movie / TV iterations of the character.

It appears to have an interesting premise, but as with anything, the proof will be in the final product. Hopefully they do justice to the character and remain true (as much as can be with a reboot / reworking) to the original intent and nature of the character.

If they go the Zach Snyder route, the project will stumble like the Flash did, but if they retain core elements from the prior film and TV versions of the character, then the project has a decent shot at success.

If anything, we're looking at a 2025 or 2026 release (barring any hiccups and delays along the way). The success or not of Superman: Legacy will be a litmus test for projects that follow it.

Take this as a rumor

If true,It seems Supergirl will be recast for the new DCU and she'll make her first appearance in Superman:Legacy before her own movie, Supergirl:Woman Of Tomorrow.

SUPERGIRL Rumored To Appear In SUPERMAN: LEGACY; Sasha Calle Will NOT Reprise The Role

https://comicbookmovie.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=cover,width=670,height=377,quality=75/https://comicbookmovie.com/images/articles/banners/208233.jpg

A new rumor doing the rounds online is claiming that Supergirl will make an appearance in James Gunn's Superman: Legacy, and the Woman of Tomorrow will not be played by The Flash star Sasha Calle...

By MarkCassidy - Dec 08, 2023

Despite being hailed by many fans as one of the highlights of The Flash, it doesn't sound like Sasha Calle will be staying on as Supergirl in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU.

The actress has expressed interest in reprising the role, but with Gunn and Safran essentially rebooting (a handful of characters aside) the entire franchise, a new Supergirl being cast was probably always going to be the most likely outcome.

We know that a Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie is in the early stages of development at Warner Bros./DC Studios, but according to insider Daniel Richtman, Kara will actually make her debut in Gunn's Superman: Legacy. Casting is said to be currently underway, which obviously means Calle will not be back in the cape.

If this is accurate, Legacy really is shaping up to be a jam-packed affair.

In addition to David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, the film will also introduce Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

More recently, Nicholas Hoult was announced as Lex Luthor, with Sara Sampaio signing on to play his assistant/lover Eve Teschmacher, and Skyler Gisondo taking on the role of Jimmy Olsen.

Members of the anti-hero team The Authority will also appear, and we recently learned that María Gabriela de Faría (Animal Control) has been cast as Angela Spica/The Engineer.

We're still not sure exactly how these other superheroes will factor into the story, but Gunn has previously revealed that Superman's dual-life as both Clark Kent and the Man of Steel will be explored in the film, suggesting that these characters will be his "super friends." Whether they'll be part of an actual team or not remains to be seen.

“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world," said Gunn during the DCU slate announcement. "I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”

Specific plot details are still under wraps, but Brainiac is rumored to be the movie's primary antagonist.

Gunn recently debunked another report which claimed that the story would revolve around some kind of conflict in the fictional Middle Eastern country of Bialya, which is where the Scarab in Blue Beetle originates from in the comics.

It was said that the Man of Steel would be blamed for a terrorist organization getting their hands on powerful Kryptonian tech, and The Authority would be sent in to investigate.

Gunn simply stated that the terrorist threat aspect "isn't true," so there's always a chance some of the other details are accurate.

Production is scheduled to get underway early next year.
