Phantom Menaces Recap

Three of seven, and no we aren't talking about a Star Trek Borg. Tonight we got to enjoy the third episode of the final season and of the first seven-episode run which writers have noted carries with it its own mini story arc. Last week's episode didn't do very well in the polls. For the first time ever we've seen a two-star rating hit second place. Curious what people didn't enjoy about last week. Setting that aside, we are excited to see if Kara will meet new allies in the Phantom Zone. Did Team Supergirl catch the escaped Phantom? Let's find out, here's what stood out to us:

  1. New Allies: The Martians head to check on Silas and find out that there is a Phantom on the loose. In the Phantom Zone, Supergirl and Zor-El head to ride the portal that the Phantoms use. They travel the portal but Supergirl is injured. A group of unknown Phantom dwellers capture Zor-El and Supergirl is left behind in the care of Nyxly. Alex watches the monologue that Kara recorded before she died. Alex is lost not having Kara around. The Luthors gather to have a power struggle. Lex wants control of his company back. Lena has locked him out but Lex has the new DA on his side and Lena will take a court order to undo the lock out. Back at the hero fortress, Silas is turned into a Phantom.
  2. Hunt for Phantoms: Silas may have affected his roommates so the team goes to hunt them down. Supergirl and Nyxly get better acquainted but discover that the group that has Zor-El are going to sacrifice Zor-El. Lena asks Brainy to put up blockers for Lex and they donate a large sum of his money to a hospital. M'gann is infected by a Phantom and now she might turn into one. Her Martian physiology makes her more easily turned.
  3. Princess: Nyxly has been sent to the Phantom Zone so that her father can remain in power. Lex discovers that Lena has drained his accounts. To get back at Lena, Lex sets fire to the Children's hospital that she donated Lex's funds to. He blames Lena for the faulty wiring in the upgrades to the new wing. In the Phantom Zone, Nyxly somehow regains her magic.
  4. Magic and Rage: The confidence that Kara has given Nyxly seems to have reactivated her powers. She now has the powers that Mxyzptlk has. They set out to save Zor-El. Lena and Brainy share a rage at how difficult Lex is as an opponent. They both are missing Kara deeply. M'Gann's prognosis is getting worse, all that she is will soon be lost as J'onn and Alex share a moment in the medical bay. J'onn will give what little he has of M'Gann in him to save her soul.
  5. Soul Transfusion: All of Team Supergirl gather in the medical bay to save M'Gann. Phantoms arrive to upset the process so Lena, Alex and Brainy go to defend while J'onn and Kelley do the transfer. The procedure is a success and M'Gann is saved.

In the final wrap up moments, Lena announces that she is leaving Luthor Corp. Fighting with Lex keeps her contained. Leaving sets her free and Lex is not pleased. J'onn and M'Gann share a sweet moment on the balcony. Alex goes to thank Kelley for being her rock. The couple decide to move in together. Nyxly and Kara are able to save Zor-El and the three begin to look for a way out.

Great emotional rollercoaster of an episode. But questions. Is Silas dead or forever a Phantom now and where did all the other Phantoms suddenly come from they had trapped in that glass prison before being sent back to PZ again. Did the Phantom that possessed Silas bring them to Earth ?
I thought they were the victims that the original Phantom turned.

I was wondering if they were Silas' roommates that were apparently missing... turned to phantoms.

I just have to say, I have looked at this episode a number of times, it is one of my most favorite. Nyxly is so adorable - I wish they had introduced her earlier in the TV series. Like I mentioned before, her powers do not overlap with Supergirl's powers - they are truly unique to her. All she wants to do is help and for someone to believe in her. I just think she is one of the best additions to the show.

I felt so Sorry for Silas - if he had never agreed to help, he probably would have never turn into a phantom. Also liked the way it showed Alex remembering Kara as she was while Silas continued to turn into a Phantom - I suppose her thoughts were of that was what Kara was dealing with in the Phantom Zone if she hadn't already become one herself.

Again, I thought this was a great episode - I have enjoyed it and am still enjoying it very much. It goes without saying that Melissa's acting was superb.

Next ep looks fantastic finally something is happening with Kara might be getting out of PZ or close to it at least.

@Stars16

I don't think they'll have moved on. But I do think this will prepare them for life without Supergirl, if they really do decide to send her to the future in the finale.

Also... I've watched the Brainy Lena scene at least 4 times. Honest to God, I shed a tear every time Brainy breaks down...especially when he says "I miss her". I know Brainy hasn't had as many deep scenes with Kara as other members if the cast. But damn...I felt that harder than anything we've gotten from Alex or J'onn.

I got the feeling after this episode that Kara, when she returns, is going to find that the team has moved on with their lives (Kelly living with Alex, M'gann with J'onn, Brainy with Nia, Lena with new goals); to the point that it might make it easier for Kara to move to the future without regret and worry of who she is leaving behind.

Also, still skeptical of Jor-El, if this kidnapping wasn't a stunt? Is he and the Imp aren't pulling the wool over Kara's eyes? Wondering also is Mxy is the brother or Father to Nxyly?

Kara in the PZ is like Dorthy in OZ in Kara’s favorite movie. Both were sent to a strange place and just want to find a way home. Like Dorthy Kara is collecting allies along the way. I like Nyxly so far but you just never know about those 5th dimensional beings. Apparently Nyxly gets out with Kara but I wonder about Zor-El. Does he live to be reunited with his wife on Argo or does he have to sacrifice himself so his daughter can go home.

The Brainy/Lena scene was a highlight, Brainy is feeling everything he never really has before. Lena basically told her abuser she’s leaving him. The fight with the phantoms was well staged everyone had a part to play. J’onn and M’ggan are a great couple I hope she sticks around. The Alex/Kelly scenes were touching.

It seems like everyone is just trying to hold it together and balance their emotions with the mission of getting Kara back.

Honestly? My bet is that her father is Mxy.

Oops! Poor phrasing by me. I meant that Nxy's description of her father sounds like someone similar to Lex, not that her father is Lex. However I don't think her father is Mxy either. Time will tell!
