Prom Again Recap

Chyler Leigh makes her directorial debut tonight! We are very excited to see how Chyler did and where we end up with Prom Night, the meteor, Kara telling her boyfriend about moving, and Cat Grant hunting down the story. There was a lot set up last episode for us to wrap up tonight. Looking at the polls, last week's episode didn't get the adulation we thought it would. Too fast paced? Regardless, we are so excited to return to Midvale with young Kara and young Alex and can't wait to see how this all wraps up. Here's what stood out to us:

  1. Kara to the Rescue: When we first meet Kara in season 1, she's repressed her powers by quite a lot. She even forgets how to fly. Back in Midvale, Kara is quite adept with her powers. She hears Brainy and Nia in trouble and the three of them are able to dispatch the alien captors. Cat Grant, however, uses a horrible drone to capture the fight. Thinking the mission is over, Kara and Kenny head to get ready for prom. Before going to the dance, Alex and Kara have a healing conversation. Brainy and Nia share a dance aboard his ship. Cat, having new footage from the alien fight goes to find the cloaked ship and accidentally frees the aliens.
  2. Cat in the Cage: The aliens have captured Cat Grant and put her in a cell on their ship while heading to capture Kara. Kara sees the meteor, she flies up and destroys it. She crashes into the gym but the alien collectors show up and threaten the school. Kenny arrives and offers himself up as a Kryptonian to save Kara.
  3. Bait and Switch: The aliens are now going to Kenny as bait to call out Kara. Kara is not doing well after the Kryptonite poisoning. Kara is ready to go save Kenny but Dreamer puts her under and Brainy and Nia are ready to take on the rescue. After getting the Kryptonite removed from her hand, Alex helps Kara escape. She is hit by the moonlight which is reflected sunlight and is instantly healed. Nia, bound in a dream captures her dream tiger. She somehow manifests it in the real world where it begins to attack the alien collectors.
  4. Captured on Two Fronts: Cat Grant is gathering the story, the aliens have escaped and the cops have arrived. Kara exposes herself as a super in front of everyone. Nia and Brainy's only recourse is to use their time machine to travel back in time again. Their plan is to stop Cat from releasing the aliens in the first place.
  5. Four and a Half Hours Earlier: Time ship has a stow away. Kara gets on the time ship and travels back in time with Brainy and Nia. Nia is able to find Cat and bring her drone down. The PW on the cage ended up standing for Perry White and Nia is able to use this knowledge to inspire Cat Grant to build her own media empire and send Cat back to Metropolis.

In the last act of the episode, Cat gets a call from Perry and she quits The Daily Planet to start her own empire. The aliens are sent to South America where the DEO will capture them. Finally Kara destroys the meteor and is poisoned by Kryptonite where Brainy and Nia can get the DNA they need. With the recent events fresh in her mind and the reality that she could be captured and turned into a government lab rat, Kara changes her choice and decides to move to National City. Nia and Brainy were successful in the time travel mission.

A fine conclusion to a fun romp. Lovely performances and some nice action.

I thought Cat getting her inspiration from Nia took away from the character's agency a bit. That quibble aside, the episode paid off everything set up in "Prom Night!"

Overall, I think they are putting together the strongest string of episodes since the start of Season 3.

Does anyone remember the Tracy Scoggins version of Cat Grant?

I do! She was great fun. Completely different take on the character, but just right for the schlocky 90's rom com that was "Lois and Clark." (And I mean that in the best possible way.)

The Paragon Earth Prime memory loss issue never settled right with me. It makes the pre-crisis hero's minds seam like parasites taking over the earth prime versions of themselves. There may be another possibility regarding Paragon memory. We know that off screen J’onn was able to restore non-paragon memory without erasing there current memory. We only saw the Paragons confused for a short period, maybe at some point he also restored the Paragons duel memories off screen.
Yeah, the concept of the Paragons is really messed up the more you dig into it.

Interesting take on the use of the Moon’s reflected sunlight. Which brings up a question, considering in Season 4 Kara was also able to extract sunlight from the surrounding plants. If Kryptonian’s can extract sunlight from anything, does that mean a villain like Zod could act like a Vitamin D Vampire to humans?

The actress playing Cat Grant was better this episode but they need to not try and duplicate Cat Grant since only Calista Flockhart can play that character the way it should be done.

I don't think adult Kara will remember, though, due to her status as a Paragon. Like Barry and J'onn, Kara seems to have no memory of Earth Prime prior to waking up on her couch after Ollie rebooted the universe. As such, she should, in theory, have no memory of alive Kenny, or past Brainy & Nia.

This is in contrast to characters like Alex, who, after having their pre-crisis memories returned by J'onn, seem to remember both histories.

If I'm correct, young Kara will keep her memories of Brainy and Nia, and I wonder what that will mean for the present when they retrieve Supergirl from the Phantom Zone. Surely something about her or her life will be different because of that.

I do wonder about that as Kara is in the PZ. Could that nuance affect her differently? It appears Crisis impacted the PZ differently than Earth, leaving it fractured. I wouldn't be surprised if they simply didn't address whether or not Kara and Alex have new memories of the (non 90210) "Brandon and Brenda", aka Brainy and Nia.

I don’t think she will, The events of the last two episodes took place on Earth-Prime. Adult Kara, the Paragon of Hope, doesn’t remember Earth-Prime history before the events of CoIE part 5. Adult Kara’s memories prior to CoIE part 5 are of events that took place on Earth-38. Now this is the head spinning part. The memories of young Earth-Prime Kara have been changed and that could have altered her life up to CoIE part 5 but as long as things aren’t too different it shouldn’t be a problem for adult Kara.

This season has truly been remarkable. Its not often you say the last season for a tv show is so strong. But SG gets to say we went out on a freakin high !

A nice end to the two parter. Kara didn’t see her exact future if her identity was revealed but she knew enough to know it wasn’t good. Helen Slater said she was scheduled this season, I wonder if something happened and she wasn’t able to appear as planned. That would’ve necessitated writing new stuff to make up for whatever she was written in. Come on Eliza only allowing Kara to do laundry once, that’s a life skill that everyone should have by 17. Izabela got to do quite a bit more stunt work than she did in season three, I’m guessing that’s because she’s 19 now so she’s allowed to do more.

I see others feel differently and that's OK... but for me Part 2 (Prom Again) was not as good as Part 1 (Prom Night). However, 5 zero star ratings are not likely. I suspect most of those votes are by people who have not bothered to watch it. However, this and episode 2 are the weakest so far for S6 in my personal opinion.

There were many likeable parts/moments and I love the actresses playing the younger Danvers sisters, but the episode was a bit too kitschy for my taste.

I appreciate they were going for a retro vibe, but sadly they failed to nail it and that camp factor level they obviously were trying to reach. It never quite happened. It felt like they were trying to have an 1980s vibe set in the 2000s.

Where was Eliza?

Still, I appreciate the return to Midvale. I am glad they made this two-parter. Clearly, there are more stories to tell, possibly via comic book/graphic novel format. Maybe the Legends can visit Midvale?

Brainy is so naturally dorky and was the right present day Superfriend to include in this episode.

I really think Nia's powers are quite amazing! I would love the writers to reveal how Nia continued her bloodline. I assume artificial insemination and a surrogate is highly possible/most probable. Possibly with the help of Alura and Kryptonian reproduction technology like we saw on the Krypton TV series. But, I'd like it to be revealed. I know Nia has a standalone Pride comic coming, but there are many stories left to tell concerning Nia Nal.

I look forward to the return to the PZ next week and Kara's rescue.. Fingers crossed it proves to be a most excellent spring finale that will hold us over until the late summer return... and PLEASE get Calista Flockhart back for at least one final appearance.

Great two-parter in Midvale. Now we know Melissa was absent during these two episodes because of her maternity leave. This has the feel of a Legends episode. More than ever I want a Midvale spinoff with young Kara, Alex, Cat, Kenny, Brainiac 5, and Nia. Chyler did a great job directing this one.

IF they DO a SPIN OFF on HBO Max like another commentor suggested then they'll have to figure out how to get around a VERY IMPORTANT PLOTHOLE. In last nights episode Young Alex realized that it would be determental to keep being insecured/trouble for the futureYET the VERY REASON THAT SHE GOT RECRUITED BY JOHN INTO THE DEO-as she stated way in season 1- WAS BECAUSE OF THOSE REASONS after she got jailed for DUI.

Action! Not romance novel! One of the best episodes ever.

And Kara carefully never tells anyone what actually happened, because, after all, she was outside the time loop alteration.

To explain: And therefore remembers what happened.
